In my last printing session I tried Ilford MGRC Portfolio Pearl finish with a high contrast negative and a low contrast negative. Unlike the famous you-tubers who were given boxes to test, I purchased the product to try it out. My paper developer is the Ansco/Formulary 130 at a dilution of 1:2 with a bit of age on the stock.
Pros
For an RC paper it is very heavy and strong.
For large prints it might be a good choice over fiber since the rigidity is stronger when wet.
The tonality is nice and neutral with deep blacks.
Ilford touts that you can use it to get to proof times equivalent to Fiber paper but I found the fiber takes about 1/4 stop more exposure to give same result.
Dries completely flat.
The pearl finish is still glossy to me.
Paper color is still neutral white and same as fiber in normal lighting.
VC contrast filter needed for RC is same as Fiber.
Less fixing and washing required for RC papers in general
Cons
When wet the dark shadow detail is almost non-existent but does show up once dry. Difficult to judge until dry.
In general I think the shadow details blocked up more than Fiber based glossy or would require more dodging.
The price is almost the same per sheet as Fiber so Fiber still wins for me.
I feel its a nice paper for any hobbyist that wants a little thicker RC paper and/or doesn’t want to use fiber because of wash times and curling. As the name suggest it is suitable for a portfolio and the image quality is about the same as fiber but the RC base can take a little more abuse than Fiber.
I have not tried bleaching or toning it yet but will post results when I do.
